![]() The Rio Uruguay The land is gently undulating. Its almost flat plains - of the Rio Uruguay , the Rio Plata and the Atlantic coast - give way to marshlands and estuaries. Its orographic system and extension of the southern Brazilian foothills, are characterized by elevations called cuchillas, whose altitudes fluctuate between 650 and 1'600 feet (200 m to 500 m) above the sea level. The coast offers a chain of sandy beaches that extend to a perimeter of almost 435 miles (700 km): 280 miles (450 km) over the Rio de la Plata and 155 miles (250 km) over the Atlantic Ocean, from Punta Gorda in the department of Colonia, to the mouth of the Chuy stream (bordering Brazil) in the department of Rocha. Uruguay has 704 miles (1133 km) of navigable rivers, approximately 500 miles (804 km) of which correspond to the Rio de la Plata and Rio Uruguay. |
