The Artigas statue on top of the mausoleum
One can not visit Montevideo without coming across themain square sooner or later - The Plaza Independecia. It is surrounded by the Sheraton Hotel, the Palacio Estevez which used to hold the presidential seat and has a great statue of the national hero Jose Artigas in it's center. But this square bears also a secret beneath it's surface which one would not notice right away. The Mausoluem of Jose Artigas.
Jose Artigas was the most important hero in Uruguayan history, he was born in Montevideo on June 19th, 1764 and died in Paraguay in September 23rd 1850.
In the heart of Montevideo, before reaching the gates to the old city, you can find in the middle of Plaza Independencia, a wonderful monument of Jose Artigas, beneath which you will discover a beautiful place of peace where the remains of Artigas are.
Guarded by two Blandengues, in the center of the mausoleum lies a big urn with Artigas' remains since June 19th, 1977.
In the walls around the urn you can read his story and what he made, from his birth all the way until the construction of the mausoleum.
Artigas was considered a great man not only in Uruguay, but also in Argentina and Paraguay, where they have monuments, streets, and even neighborhoods with his name.
