75 years on the job - a Ford AA Truck Today afternoon we came across another legend. It stood there in the middle of the busy and noise inner city traffic of Montevideo and simply did it's job. As it did for the last 75 years: A Ford AA Truck.
The driver Carlos allowed us to take pictures and seemed to be used to the admiration we gave his vehicle. The Ford truck has been in the family for at least three generation, Carlos told us and I could sense a little pride in his voice as he spoke about the van. His grandfather already used it as a daily work machine.
Everybody knows the famous Ford T Model, the first industrial produced car in history. After the T Model and it's commercial bigger brother the TT Model
became outdated and obsolete Ford created another legend - The AA
series which became the first affordable small size truck in the
history of transportation. The First AA Trucks war produced from 1926
until after World War II. - The Soviet Union bought a license and
produced the AA Model under the name GAZ AA for long after WWII.
It was cheap reliable and simply did it's job whether as a commercial
truck, small bus, ambulance or dumb truck. It help build the modern
world around the globe.
The Model that does it job for Carlos and his family for about 75
years now is approximately a 1933 build. It has a 3.3 liter engine
which gives the truck up to 40 horsepower at 2.200 rpm. It has already
an electric starter and a four speed gear plus revers. We asked Carlos
about the top speed but he just smiled: "We don't go racing with it - it does it's job. Every day. As we do." he added. And this is what it will probably do for the next three generations. Good luck!
